Directions to My Secret Trout Spot

Man, what is it with trout anglers? In conversation, they'll ask you a very standard, "Where ya fishin'?," to which I usually respond with the name the of the river system I'm fishing. If it were hunting, paddling, surfing or any other kind of fishing, that would be sufficient for friendly conversation, "Oh that's great, I used to go up there. Have fun up there!"

But a few times per week, I run into a bona fide trout angler.  And they want to know it all.  "Ooh.  That river.  Which fork? Above the bridge? Where do you park? Are you talking the third pool or the fourth pool? What flies you throwin'? Where ya buy 'em?"  And of course, I waver between telling them useless, ambiguous information aaaaaaaaaaaaand.....flat out lying and saying I was somewhere else.  Heck no, I won't tell you where I keep catching fish!  Not unless we fish there together!

But I just can't fight it any more, and so here are the directions to my favorite trout fishing spot.

Go north until the air begins to reek of kettle chips, Ben Rouethlisboerguer and the Amish.

Turn left at the frog.

Turn right at The Rock.  You know, "The Rock!"

Well, now you do!  Finally, go under the Icy Troll Bridge!

And you're there!!!! Good luck fishing "my" little spot!

No no, you're doing it all wrong. You're supposed to purposefully get them close enough that they -think- you're telling them the secret spot. But leave out a few important details and point them to a spot that will never, and has never, had fish in it.

Then they try and fail and never come back. :)

Alex, that's just wrong! I like to be comfortably vague so they don't even try. Same way with hunting. I've been known to tell someone that I was on a creek north or south of where I actually was.....but I don't get specific....poor bastards!

Jay, I figured somebody would pick up on the frog mailbox. Luckily there are about 500 pools with at least 1 trout in them within walking distance of that spot!

I've never seen another angler at this spot. I think the reason is that I have lower expectations than other trout fishermen - if I catch 1 trout over 12" long, it's a GREAT day; if I catch 1 trout of any size, I'm somewhat satisfied.

I've recently heard some of the grumblings about the heavily stocked sites and realized that a lot of Baltimore area anglers think it's normal to go out and catch two dozen trout in an afternoon.

So maybe I'm fishing the wrong spots afterall.
